Big stars, small stars, and the ones that do the real work

The famous stars are ★ and ☆, and they are useful when you want an obvious marker — a rating, a bullet, a divider. But the star symbols that make aesthetic text look aesthetic are the small ones: ⋆, ✦, ✧, ˚, ˖ and ⭒. Each is barely bigger than a full stop.

That is the whole trick. Two or three tiny sparkles scattered around a word read as light catching on something. One large filled star in the same place reads as a badge. Most people reach for the big one first and wonder why the result looks heavy.

Sparkle patterns you can copy and paste

A sparkle cluster is usually three marks at different sizes — something like ⋆⭒˚。⋆ or . ݁₊ ⊹. The variation in size is what stops it looking like a row of dots. The combos on this page are already balanced that way, so you can copy and paste one straight into a bio without adjusting anything.

If you are building your own, put the largest mark in the middle and the smallest at the edges. It reads as a glint rather than a border.

Where star symbols get used most

Discord nicknames, TikTok display names, Instagram bios, Spotify playlist titles and Roblox profiles are the big five. All of them accept these characters. Google Docs, Notion and spreadsheet cells take them too, which is why the plain ★ turns up so often in home-made rating columns.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between ★ and ✦?

★ is a five-pointed filled star from the Miscellaneous Symbols block; ✦ is a four-pointed one from Dingbats. The four-pointed version reads more like a sparkle or a glint, which is why it turns up in aesthetic text far more often.

How do I make the tiny sparkles I see in bios?

They are individual characters, not a font effect. ⋆, ˚, ₊, ⊹ and ˖ are the ones doing most of the work. Copy two or three and space them unevenly around your text.

Do star symbols work in a Discord nickname?

Yes. Discord accepts the full range in nicknames, server names and status text, and they show correctly on desktop, web and mobile.

Are these star symbols free to use?

Yes. They are standard Unicode characters, the same category of thing as letters and punctuation. Nobody owns them and there is nothing to credit.

Popular star symbols and what they are called

The hardest part of finding star symbols is that most people have no name for the character they are looking for. Here are ten of the most-copied star symbols on this page with their official Unicode names, so the search box — here or anywhere else — actually finds them next time.

  • ★ — Black Star
  • ❀ — White Florette
  • ✧ — White Four Pointed Star
  • ✿ — Black Florette
  • ☆ — White Star
  • ✦ — Black Four Pointed Star
  • ✩ — Stress Outlined White Star
  • ✪ — Circled White Star
  • ✯ — Pinwheel Star
  • ✰ — Shadowed White Star

Checking star symbols before you commit to them

Every character here is defined by the Unicode standard, which fixes what a character means but not how it is drawn. That is left to whichever font the reading device happens to use, which is why the same symbol can look rounder on an iPhone than on Android, and why a rarely-supported one shows as an empty box. If you want to check where a particular character comes from, the official Unicode character charts list every block.

In practice the rule is simple: the older and more common the character, the safer it is. If a decoration is going somewhere you cannot easily edit later — a username, a printed document, a shared profile — paste it into a message to yourself on a second device first and see what arrives.

Everything on this page is free to use. The star symbols here are ordinary Unicode characters rather than images or a font you have to install, which is why they copy and paste cleanly between apps, survive being sent in a message, and cost you nothing to use commercially. Tap any of the star symbols above whenever you need one.
