These are characters, not fonts

This is the thing worth understanding before you use them. ๐“ผ๐“ฌ๐“ป๐“ฒ๐“น๐“ฝ is not the letter s in a script font โ€” it is a completely separate Unicode character called MATHEMATICAL BOLD SCRIPT SMALL S. Unicode encoded these alphabets so that mathematicians could distinguish one variable from another, and social media adopted them as a way of getting styled text into fields that do not allow formatting.

That origin explains every quirk. It is why they survive a copy-paste into a bio, and also why they behave oddly in other ways.

What they cost you

Two real trade-offs. Search stops working: a search for your name in ordinary letters will not match the styled version, because as far as the platform is concerned they are different characters entirely. Screen readers struggle: many read these letter by letter, or as the mathematical names, which makes a fancy bio unreadable to anyone using one.

A reasonable compromise is to style a display name and leave the searchable username and the important lines of your bio in plain letters.

Which styles are safest

Bold, italic and bold-italic have the widest font coverage. Script, fraktur and double-struck are well supported on iOS and desktop but occasionally patchy on Android. Small caps and the superscript alphabet are incomplete in Unicode itself โ€” a few letters simply do not exist, so words containing them fall back to normal letters mid-word.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my fancy text turn back into normal letters?

Some platforms deliberately normalise these characters back to plain ASCII, especially in fields used for identity. That is a policy decision on their side and there is no way around it.

Are fancy letters bad for SEO or search?

For anything searchable, yes. They are different characters from ordinary letters, so a search for the plain spelling will not find them. Keep names and keywords in normal letters.

Can I use fancy letters in an Instagram username?

No. The @username field only accepts letters, numbers, full stops and underscores. Display names and bios accept them fine.

Why are some letters missing from a style?

Because Unicode never encoded them. The superscript and small-caps sets in particular have gaps, so a word containing a missing letter shows that one letter in the normal font.

Popular fancy letters and what they are called

The hardest part of finding fancy letters is that most people have no name for the character they are looking for. Here are ten of the most-copied fancy letters on this page with their official Unicode names, so the search box — here or anywhere else — actually finds them next time.

  • รผ — Latin Small Letter U With Diaeresis

Checking fancy letters before you commit to them

Every character here is defined by the Unicode standard, which fixes what a character means but not how it is drawn. That is left to whichever font the reading device happens to use, which is why the same symbol can look rounder on an iPhone than on Android, and why a rarely-supported one shows as an empty box. If you want to check where a particular character comes from, the official Unicode character charts list every block.

In practice the rule is simple: the older and more common the character, the safer it is. If a decoration is going somewhere you cannot easily edit later — a username, a printed document, a shared profile — paste it into a message to yourself on a second device first and see what arrives.

Everything on this page is free to use. The fancy letters here are ordinary Unicode characters rather than images or a font you have to install, which is why they copy and paste cleanly between apps, survive being sent in a message, and cost you nothing to use commercially. Tap any of the fancy letters above whenever you need one.
